Trio – A Journey to Restore Her Wrist

Age: 12 years old

Trio's Story

Baby Trio (Ker Ser Paw), a 12-year-old Karen girl born on June 5, 2011, is the oldest of four children from Karen State. In March 2022, she sustained a fractured left wrist while fleeing her village during a Myanmar military Junta attack. In the jungle, her injury received only warm compresses and a makeshift bandage, causing the fractured bones to heal in an awkward position resulting in wrist malfunction.

Fractured and misaligned left distal radius and ulna — sustained while fleeing Myanmar military attack in March 2022. Bones healed in misaligned position due to lack of medical care in the jungle.

Treatment Plan

  • Referral from Saiyok Hospital to Kanchanaburi provincial hospital to Mission Hospital Bangkok
  • Surgical repair of left distal radius and ulna at Mission Hospital (May 12, 2022)
  • Post-operative follow-up showing corrected deformity (May 23, 2022)
  • Surgical pin removal with properly aligned bones (August 2022)

Medical Journey

March 2022: Ker Ser Paw sustained a fractured left wrist while escaping her village. Without healthcare access in the jungle, her injury was managed with improvised care, leading to misaligned bone healing.

April 2022: She arrived at the Bongti border checkpoint in Thailand and was taken in by the Bamboo School. A routine health check revealed her wrist injury, prompting referral to Saiyok Hospital, then Kanchanaburi provincial hospital. The case's complexity required referral to a tertiary Bangkok hospital.

May 12, 2022: Ker Ser Paw underwent surgery at Mission Hospital in Bangkok to repair her left distal radius and ulna, correcting the misaligned bones.

May 23, 2022: Two weeks post-surgery, her wrist showed significant improvement with corrected deformity and restored functionality. A 30-day follow-up was scheduled.

August 2022: Her wrist had healed well without complications. Surgical pins were removed with properly aligned bones, and she regained full hand use requiring no further medical attention.
